Qualitative vs Quantitative Research (And When to Use Each)
Quantitative research measures — it asks "how much, how many, how often" and answers with numbers and statistics. Qualitative research interprets — it asks "how and why" and answers with meaning, themes, and context. Neither is better; each fits a different kind of question.
1. Quantitative: numbers, at scale
Quantitative work tests hypotheses on measurable variables using surveys, experiments, or existing datasets, then analyses them statistically. Its strengths are objectivity, replicability, and generalising from a sample to a population. It struggles to capture nuance and lived experience.
2. Qualitative: meaning, in depth
Qualitative work explores experiences and processes through interviews, focus groups, observation, or documents, analysed by coding for themes. Its strengths are depth, context, and discovering the unexpected. It does not generalise statistically, and analysis is more interpretive.
3. When to use which
Choose quantitative when your question is about measurement, frequency, or relationships between variables you can define in advance. Choose qualitative when you are exploring a poorly understood phenomenon, or need the "why" behind the numbers.
4. Mixed methods: using both
A mixed-methods design combines them — for example, a survey to measure a trend, then interviews to explain it. Done well, each method covers the other's blind spot; done carelessly, it doubles the work without adding insight. Have a clear reason for combining them.
5. Let the question lead
The most common mistake is picking a method first and forcing the question to fit. Write your research question clearly, then choose the approach that can actually answer it.
How ProSearch helps
ProSearch searches the literature on your topic and shows how prior studies were designed — qualitative, quantitative, or mixed — with each finding tied to its source. It is a fast, grounded way to see which methods your field uses before you commit to your own.
