How to Find Free Full-Text Academic Papers (Open Access)

Hitting a paywall does not mean the paper is out of reach. A large and growing share of research is legally available for free — you just need to know where to look.

Open-access repositories and indexes

Start with indexes that point only to legal full text: the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), CORE (200M+ open-access papers), OpenAlex, and Semantic Scholar, which often link a free PDF. Many fields also have subject repositories.

Preprints

Authors frequently post a free preprint (a pre-peer-review version) on servers like arXiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv, or SSRN. The content is usually very close to the published version.

Author and institutional copies

Authors are often allowed to share a copy. Look on their personal page, ResearchGate, or their university's institutional repository — or simply email the corresponding author and ask. Most are happy to send it.

Legal browser tools

Tools like Unpaywall and Open Access Button find a legal free version when one exists. Avoid pirate sites — they are illegal and risky.
